Fire is a wonderful tool - and has great destructive potential. There are many kinds of fire besides those involving oxidation - the fire of love, the fire of patriotism. But all fire seems to share that dichotomy of the potential for good and evil.

The fires of patriotism and nationalism can prompt some of our most noble instincts - but taken too far are destructive. I think the one thing that sets our military and government service in general apart from other countries is that the oath is not to the government itself, but to "protect and defend" an abstract concept: the Constitution. Not the President, not even the Government, just the Constitution and the concepts behind it.

Eternal Flame and Tomb of the Unknown Who was more evil, Hitler or Stalin? Just on numbers I think you have to give the nod to Uncle Joe. While they served an evil system, I think it is appropriate to remember the soldiers caught in the middle, so as I have done at Arlington, and at the graves of German, French, and other soldiers, I said a prayer here as well. But at Dachau, I cried. Canon EOS Rebel, Canon (100mm) |
